Setsuko is a lonely, aging Japanese from Tokyo, who is convinced by her niece Mika to enroll in an unconventional English course. In it she must wear a blond wig and act as an American named Lucy. The new identity of Sezzuko’s tomato and soon she succeeds in falling in love with her American teacher John. Soon he disappears, and Setsuk learns that John was coming out with Mika. With the help of her sister Ayako, she traveled to southern California in search of the fugitive pair. In the different world of tattoo studios and cheap motels, family ties and past life are tested, while Setsuk is struggling to keep his beloved identity, Lucy’s.
